As we approach the Twentieth Anniversary of 9.11 America has witnessed the full circle of tragic events. The horrific flight attacks on the World Trade Centers, Operation Enduring Freedom military campaign on Afghanistan and now the massive effort to airlift out twenty years of troops, US citizens, friends, allies equipment and weapons.
We see on television the loss of life for all involved, and see again new levels of destruction and death. Plus a whole lot of money, Three hundred million dollars a day for 20 years! All kinds of weapons prevailed in this course of action, some primitive, many sophisticated but yet here we are 20 years later.
Since 2001, the US has spent $2.26 trillion in Afghanistan, the Costs of War Project at Brown University calculates. The biggest chunk – nearly $1 trillion – was consumed by the Overseas Contingency Operations budget for the Department of Defense. The second biggest line item – $530bn – is the estimated interest payments on the money the US government borrowed to fund the war.
In all of the wars and military engagements fought by the United States since Sept. 11, 2001, the country has spent over $6.4 trillion — largely funded by borrowing, the Cost of War project estimates.
